Today in design futures we have just been playing around with designs for vases and we also got taught how to make stands for our vases and have two designs on the same page and mate them together today i made my first design with a stand it wasn't very good but i tried. i am very happy with the progress that i am making.
This lesson we got given a book that showed us how to advance our designs and how to make them more practical and complex. I had some troubles with this at first as i couldn't quite comprehend ow to do all of the techniques, but my friends and teacher helped me and got me up to speed and i ended up enjoying it.
this term in df we are learning how to create 3D models or vases, iPods and more on a computer. it has been very interesting learning how to all of it. At first it was a little hard to get the hang of it but now i ham pretty used to it, Mr Ward is also very helpful so it makes it much easier for my peers and myself to learn how to use the new application. My friends and peers are also very helpful, getting me up to speed when i was away and helping me if i am stuck and Mr Ward is busy. So far i am enjoying the new experience instead of being in the workshop all the time, it is different.

evaluation
Evaluation:
FUNCTION-
Does the artefact do what it is designed to do?
Yes the desk tidy does what I wanted it to do because it holds many items and will help clean up my desk.
Does it perform effectively and efficiently?
Yes it does work effectively as it holds everything I wanted it to hold in a small space that doesn't take up much room on my desk.
What improvements could be made?
A lot of improvements could be made, I can make it smaller to take up less space on my desk and I could make it hold more stuff. I would make it more fluro colours like pink and orange and I would lastly design it to have and iphone and ipad holder.
AESTHETICS-
I am very happy with my desk tidy because it has very bright colours and it will go with my white room. It will suite my room as it is a contrasting colour and will stand out. It is a suitable size and will fit on my desk easily. The shape of my desk tidy is very simple but very modern and I chose it because it keeps with the latest fashion designs for desk tidy’.
ERGONOMICS-
My desk tidy is very light weight and fits on my desk perfectly being very convenient. In terms of safety, there will be no problems as I glue it down with very strong glue and will not be a safety hazard as it will not fall apart. The only safety issue that needs to be considered when using my desk tidy is that there are a few sharp edges on the corners of my desk tidy but they can easily be fixed but using sandpaper and smoothing them off.
ECONOMICS-
This desk tidy was very cost effective being very cheap although it took sometime to make it.
1 acrylic sheet= 122cm x 244cm
0.08885m2 (how much used) x 29768 (size of 1 sheet) x $95.70 =
0.08885m2 x 29768 x 95.70 = $2.85
question 4
Question 4.
Working out:
29.5cm x 21cm = 619.5cm²
10cm x 4.5cm x 4 = 180cm²
3cm x 4cm = 12cm²
7cm x 5.5cm = 38.5cm²
7cm x 5.5cm = 38.5cm²
12cm + 38.5cm² + 38.5cm² = 89cm²
619.5 + 180 + 89 = 888.5cm²
888.5cm² = 0.08885m²
For my desk tidy I used a total of 0.08885m²
question 3:
Question 3:
1. Granules of plastic powder (note the plastics listed above) are poured or fed into a hopper which stores it until it is needed.
2. A heater heats up the tube and when it reaches a high temperature a screw thread starts turning.
3. A motor turns a thread which pushes the granules along the heater section which melts then into a liquid. The liquid is forced into a mould where it cools into the shape (in this case a DVD storage unit).
4. The mould then opens and the unit is removed.
assesment question 1
Question 1:
Band saw
- wear safety goggles or a face mask when working with the band saw machine
- wear lab coats when using machine
-always be supervised by a teacher
- never use the machine unless instructed to do so by the teacher
- make sure you are the only person standing inside the yellow line when machine is on
- don't stand inside the yellow line when someone else is using a machine
Belt sander
- wear safety goggles or a face mask when using the machine
- wear lab coats when using machine
-always be supervised by a teacher
- do not use sanding material larger than needed.
- make sure you are the only person standing inside the yellow line when machine is on
- don't stand inside the yellow line when someone else is using a machine
- wear appropriate footwear
- do not remove loose material from machine until the machine has fully stopped

DF assignment
Design Futures Assignment Questions
What is the actual difference between lights of different colours?
We can see lights in many different colours because of the amount of light reflected and absorbed. Objects absorb some wavelengths of light and reflect others sun. The sun produces light known as white light, which is a blend of many different coloured lights, known as visible light. For example a apple is the colour red because it reflects light in the red wavelength and absorbs all other visible wavelengths.
Define the following lighting terms: ambient light, direct light diffuser, luminosity, energy efficiency, and watts.
Direct Light Diffuser: It is a light fixture, such as a frosted globe, that spreads light evenly. It is used in photography to soften shadows.
Luminosity: Is the brightness of a light with certain wavelengths as it appears to the human eye.
Watts: Watts are a unit of power. They measure the rate of electrical energy being consumed or released.
Ambient Light: It is any light outside coming through windows, or an overhead room light. An example sunlight is ambient light.
Energy Efficiency: Energy Efficiency is about using less energy, but still providing the same level of output.
Comment on Global Warming
The scientific community agree that humans are very likely to cause an increase in global average temperature. Global warming is when the earth's temperature rises. This happens when greenhouse gases trap heat and light from the sun into the earth's heat. Once the light and heat is in the atmosphere it cannot get out. If there is to many greenhouse gases on the earth it will get too hot. Global warming is making the sea rise creating a problem for animals, plants and people on islands. The pollution cause from it is destroying many forests because of the acid in the pollution. The government has implemented a new law called the Clean Air Act. This is helping stop global warming as many regulations are being placed. These include making companies change their products, adding labels on polluting products and they are also making car companies change the machinery because cars are one of the main causes of global warming.
How can the modern home become more energy efficient with regard to lighting?
Modern homes have become a main source of energy consumption. This is because of heating, television, lights, electricity ,showers and food preparation. With the amount of energy being consumed people need to find ways to create an energy efficient home. Some ways to become more energy efficient at home include installing heavier and more modern insulation into homes to steady the house’s climate and reduce energy usage. Another way is by changing your lighting to LED lights as the amount of energy used is less. Solar hot water panels, space heating and cooling with passive-solar design and eaves over the side of your house all contribute to creating a modern, energy efficient home.
Research a modern day lighting designer and comment on their contribution to the design world.
Mark Elliot has over a decades' experience as an architectural lighting design consultant. Trained as a furniture designer he calls upon these skills in detailing light into architecture. His broad international experience as a lighting designer includes work across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Australasia and America. He has lots of connections and experience which helps him create energy efficient lights.

Today in DF mr Ward helped me bend my aluminum and cut it. i bent it by bending it over a metal cylinder. i also cut off the parts of aluminum i didn't need and sanded the edges. my piece of wood was not stable enough so i had to figure out another way of making it stable Mr Ward thought that i could use glue to stick two pieces of triangular wood together i am happy with my new design and i am close to attaching my aluminum to the wood blocks. i am also looking forward to attaching the LED lights.

Today in DF we finalised our designs and started designing them with materials. We figured out how much waste we would have and the measurements and where we had to cut the alliminuam. I am very happy with how my LED light looks so far. I also cut my piece of wood today, it is cut in half in a shape of a triangle which suits my design. Mr Ward helped me cut out my piece of wood and he also helped me sand it, to make the edges smooth.
